WHY BOTHER MAKING THIS THING
i have a really weirdly-shaped living room with all the various doors, windows, radiator etc. in places that make everything inconvenient. particularly the all-important sofa placement.

i figure that if i can cram everything “entertainment”-related into some vertical space in this little corner, that will in turn solve some seating issues because it’ll open up a little floor space and make the television visible from more locations.

DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS: DIMENSIONS
the interior measurements are likely to change. the only two numbers i care about are the 16" of clearance that so i can store records underneath, probably in milk crates, and the 20" for the tv shelf. otherwise i need storage for: dvd and vhs players (can be stacked on one shelf), receiver, cable box, router, record player, and misc equipage (i have a rarely-used gamecube, spare Y-cables and other crap). ideally i could put movies in this thing but there might not be enough room.

DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS: JOINERY
when i built my credenza, i used a pretty simple system of half-lap joints and dados. this time i am trying to decide if i should challenge myself to mostly use Mortise and tenon joints in a frame and panel system* or try pocket-hole joinery**.

the advantage of the former is that it’s a traditional cabinet joinery style that is important for me to learn at some point. it’s also really strong, and the frame and panel allows the wood to move with the seasons without distressing the piece. the disadvantage is that it requires some annoying math. which means, more chances to screw up.

the advantage of the latter is that it’s easier (no annoying maths) but still relatively strong. it’s easier to disassemble/reassemble/repair/adjust. the disadvantage is that it’s not as strong: in particular, i worry about racking, given the height/width ratio of the piece.
